Nero StartSmart 7 running under Windows Vista
Nero is a popular software suite for Microsoft Windows and Linux by Nero AG, formerly Ahead Software.
[4] The principal component of the software bundle is Nero Burning ROM.
[edit] Nero Suite of Products
The following applications are included in Nero 9 [5][6]:
[edit] Nero StartSmart
- Nero StartSmart: The central hub for utilizing various applications in Nero suite of applications. As of version 8, Nero SmartStart is able to perform several basic operations without launching any of Nero application, such as simple CD Burning.
[edit] Nero Disc Authoring Tools
- Nero Burning ROM: The well-known optical disc authoring program of Nero AG and one of its first products.
- Nero Express: A more simplified incarnation of Nero Burning ROM targeted for starter audience.
- Nero ImageDrive: Nero's virtual drive utility that allows users to mount their CD or DVD disk images into a virtual DVD drive and treat them like real media from within other Windows applications.
- Nero CoverDesigner: Enables users to design and print disc covers.
- Nero BurnRights: Enables administrators to assign required drive access rights to other users.
- Nero DiscSpeed: A disc speed measurement and performance diagnostic tool.
- Nero DriveSpeed: A utility for measuring and fine-tuning various aspects of disc writer drives.
- Nero Info Tool: Helps extracting valuable disc-authoring related system information.
- Nero DiscCopy Gadget: A Windows Vista Sidebar gadget that allows users to perform simple disc-burning operations quickly from Sidebar.

- InCD: InCD is a packet writing software that allows optical discs to be used in a similar manner to a floppy disk.
[edit] Nero Entertainment Applications
- Nero ShowTime: Nero's powerful media player software capable of playing back various types of audio and video files and media, including Audio CDs, Video DVDs and Blu-Ray discs, Nero Digital movies and a wide range of Audio and Video files.
- Nero Live: A media center application for PCs and media center TVs capable of playing back various media in addition to tuning TV programs.
- Nero Live Gadget, a Windows Vista gadget that allows a smart version of Nero Live to run in Windows Vista Sidebar.
[edit] Nero Video Authoring Tools
- Nero Vision: Non-linear video editing tool capable of mixing video clips and authoring DVDs.[5][6]
- Nero Recode: Converts personal video files and non-copyrighted Video DVDs into Nero Digital format, which dramatically reduces their size while maintaining their quality.
[edit] Nero Audio Editing Tools

- Nero SoundTrax: Multi-track audio mixing tool capable of creating and exporting audio mixes.
[edit] Nero Photo Tools
- Nero PhotoSnap: Basic photo editing tool.
- Nero PhotoSnap Viewer: Basic photo viewing tool.
[edit] Other tools
- Nero BackItUp: A system backup utility, Nero BackItUp was an integral part of Nero 7 and Nero 8 suites[7][8]. As of Nero 9, however, Nero BackItUp 4 is a standalone backup product and is no longer integrated into Nero suite. [9] Although, customers receive a free copy of Nero BackItUp 4 upon purchasing a copy of Nero 9.[10]
- Nero Linux: A set of disc authoring tools for Linux based pcs. The interface is GTK+ based.
[edit] Bundle naming conventions
The whole bundled suite is called Nero followed by its major version number and a catchphrase which can vary by country (for example, Nero 7 Ultra Edition Enhanced in the United States, or Nero 7 Premium Reloaded in the United Kingdom and Australia); however, the core program is still called Nero Burning ROM.[11]
The most commonly available Nero versions are the OEM suites, which are bundled with many optical disc recorders. Some of these suites do not include Nero Burning ROM program itself, [12], leaving the more simplified Nero Express as the main optical disc-authoring program.
[edit] Criticisms
Programs:Nero (computer software)
Nero AG has been accused of software bloatCategory:Articles with specifically-marked weasel-worded phrases since March 2009[by whom?] due to its slow evolution from a simple, efficient burning program to an oversized home entertainment package. A large installer contains many features perceivedCategory:Articles with specifically-marked weasel-worded phrases since March 2009[by whom?] as unnecessary by many experienced usersCategory:Articles with specifically-marked weasel-worded phrases since March 2009[who?]:[13] Visual Basic ActiveX control, CD/DVD label creator, sound editor, photo editor, and others. The premium versions of Windows Vista also has all the home entertainment, DVD burning, movie editing and backup features.
This has spawned a niche of unofficial, more streamlined installers, such as Nero Micro, which include only features deemed to be essential, resulting in installer sizes as low as 13 MB, and featuring "just Nero Burning Rom with basic Audio/VideoCD support (English)."[14]
While many components can be removed using the official installer, its large size and the inability to remove all undesired components via its interface make these alternatives desirable. A valid Nero license key is still required for all installations.[13]
One of the factors that produces even more criticismCategory:Articles with specifically-marked weasel-worded phrases since March 2009[by whom?] is the fact that the latest Nero 9 needs .NET Framework 3.0 to run.
As an example, the setup for Nero 6 Ultra Edition (which contains all the features) is ~33 MB, while the setup for the 9 version is ~380 MB.
